The entire world is watching today as we press toward the 6:00pm hour due to the widespread predictions of Harold Camping, an 89 year old man who has predicted the end of the world! People have sold homes, cashed in their 401k and helped fund a widespread marketing campaign that has brought international attention. I have tweeted short jokes about this campaign, but in all reality, this is no laughing matter! I wrote about my interaction with two people in the Miami airport recently, and it’s sad that many of Camping’s followers don’t have true hope. The troubling reality is that as we enter the evening hours today, the skeptical world will be laughing at Christianity and the followers of Camping will be extremely disappointed. This type of disappointment is always certain when people place their trust in a man who has led them to ignore the authority of Holy Scripture. While today is not going to be the judgment day that the Bible speaks of – it will be a judgment day for Harold Camping!
John MacArthur once said, “The teaching of a false prophet cannot withstand scrutiny under the divine light of Scripture.” Today is certainly judgment day for Harold Camping. Today is the day when the world judges him for his predictions, and one day he will stand before the Sovereign Judge who will judge his soul. The Bible warns us of false teachers who will come in the latter days making false claims about Christ.
2 Peter 2:1-3 says, “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”
It should be known that Harold Camping has made predictions in 1994 that did not come to pass, and now he is in the spotlight making another bold claim that Jesus will return today. These predictions violate the truth of Matthew 24:36, and they lead to much confusion. Many people have followed Harold Camping and troubled teaching – and it has led to the blaspheming of God’s Truth. Harold Camping seems greedy for attention and a following of people – but the words of Scripture explain to us that his judgment and condemnation is not asleep! One day – Camping will stand before the Sovereign Lord and give account of his life – and the Lord will judge him for his false predictions and claims that have confused many people.
If you happen to be reading this post today as you prepare for the end of the world – remember – place your trust and hope in Jesus Christ alone. Don’t believe a preacher or anyone who directly violates the truth of God’s Word. A man who claims to speak for God will not try to explain away the Word that God has given to us. We don’t need any new or fresh revelations from God – He has inspired His divine Word and it is sufficient for our journey of faith.
Important Points To Consider:
1. The Bible never records secret or hidden messages. The point of Scripture is to reveal – not to conceal the truth. If God wanted us to know that He was returning on May 21st, he wouldn’t need to conceal it in a hidden code for Harold Camping to discover.
2. Tom Ascol tweeted the following this morning, “One thing is certain, when Jesus returns, He won’t need any mere mortal to announce it (1 Thess. 4:16).”
3. True hope and salvation is found in Jesus Christ – not a secret code found by a small group of people who are claiming the end of the world is here. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:5-11). One day, the Lord will return and the world will end, but we must remember that the point of Scripture is to prepare us for that day without naming the day. That day is a secret day hidden on God’s calendar, and we must be prepared for Christ to come!
4. If you have realized that Harold Camping’s teaching is flawed and discovered that your faith has been in someone other than Jesus Christ – I would encourage you to turn to Him today and repent of your sin. The Bible tells us that we deserve the wrath of God, but our God has sent His Son Jesus – the Christ – to pay the ultimate price for the salvation of everyone who will believe! If you will call out to God for mercy and salvation today – God will hear you and He will save you (Romans 10:13; John 3:16-17)!
For the glory of King Jesus!
