Continuing the series from Isaiah 9:6 on how Jesus fulfills the description of the prophecy – today’s point is that Jesus is the Wonderful One. The series is outlined below and will continue daily (except Sunday) until the series is completed.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Jesus is often marginalized during the Christmas season as we focus on the typical festivities that surround the season of Christmas. It would be good if every Christian and ministry would focus on who Jesus is and what He has done during the Christmas season. Is Jesus really the reason for the season?
Part III – JESUS: The Wonderful One
Why is Jesus wonderful? What has He done to be given such a high title and description? As we consider the title “wonderful” it should be pointed out that this word wonderful actually means – “extraordinary, hard to be understood.” Jesus is extraordinary and hard to comprehend. It has been said that there are 286 different names for Jesus in the Word of God. Maybe there are so many names and titles in order to properly define Him and describe His love, power, and authority. That is what the prophet Isaiah had in mind when he penned down this about Christ Jesus. That is why he said that His name shall be called wonderful!How do we know that this prophecy is about Jesus Christ? Several reasons perhaps exist as proof of this fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth. The fact that no man has ever been born on this earth who could be called the mighty God is the most compelling reason. And here as we see that His name is called wonderful is yet another proof. No man has ever been born on the face of the earth who could be rightly titled wonderful. Many men have done great things, but none have earned or deserved the right to be called wonderful! The wonder of Jesus of Nazareth is past finding out and measuring with human intellect. He is the Wonderful One!
S.M. Lockridge, in his famous description of Jesus titled, Thats My King, describes Jesus by saying:
He’s God’s Son. He’s the sinner’s saviour. He’s the centrepiece of civilization. He stands alone in Himself. He’s honest. He’s unique. He’s unparalleled. He’s unprecedented. He’s supreme. He’s pre-eminent. He’s the grandest idea in literature. He’s the highest personality in philosophy. He’s the supreme problem in higher criticism. He’s the fundamental doctrine of historic theology. He’s the carnal necessity of spiritual religion. That’s my King.
Therefore, as we come to this season of Christmas, we have a reason to celebrate and worship our Savior Jesus Christ because He is the ruler who continues to reign and will always reign victoriously. Isaiah 9:6 claims that He has a name that shall be called Wonderful. The prophet was right when he penned down those words. Jesus has already been called wonderful and will continue to be worshipped as the Wonderful One for all eternity.
W.A. Criswell, in his sermon titled, His Name is Wonderful, described the wonder of Jesus by saying,
“His name shall be called Wonderful.” He is wonderful in His pre-existence. All of us were created when we were born. God fashioned our physical frames in the womb of our mothers. Then God breathed into us the breath of life and we became a living soul. We were created, we began our existence upon our birth. But not the Lord Jesus. “In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was God. All things were made by Him, and without Him, was not anything made that was made.” The pre-existent Christ. In the twelfth chapter of the Book of John, the sainted Apostle identifies the Lord Jesus as the Jehovah of the Old Testament. In the Old Testament His name was Jehovah. In the New Testament, His name is Jesus, the wonderful God of the old covenant and of the new. In the Book of John, he quotes the Lord as saying, “Before Abraham was, I am.”
Let us consider the fact that Jesus was wonderful in His pre-incarnate state when He created the world. He was wonderful in His birth. He was wonderful in His sinless life. He was wonderful in His willful death. He was wonderful in His victorious resurrection. He is wonderful today! He shall be wonderful on the day of His return. He will be wonderful for eternity.Let us praise Him – Jesus our blessed Redeemer. Let us worship and praise the Son that was given during this Christmas season.
