JESUS: The Mighty God

Continuing the series from Isaiah 9:6 on how Jesus fulfills the description of the prophecy – today’s point is that Jesus is the Mighty God! The series is outlined below and will continue daily (except Sunday) until the series is completed.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Jesus is often marginalized during the Christmas season as we focus on the typical festivities that surround the season of Christmas. It would be good if every Christian and ministry would focus on who Jesus is and what He has done during the Christmas season. Is Jesus really the reason for the season?

Part V – JESUS: The Mighty God

One of the most profound statements in Holy Scripture about our Savior is this phrase used by the prophet Isaiah. When he claims that Jesus shall be called the Mighty God – it sends shock waves through the world! That a man should be called the Mighty God is a strange doctrine indeed. It seems impossible. It seems odd. It seems like it could not happen. But it did.Consider the fact of Jesus as the Mighty God in light of the shepherds who came to view the baby.

Luke 2:8-11 – And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Consider the fact of Jesus as the Mighty God in light of the angels of Heaven. They rejoiced at His birth!

Luke 2:13-14 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Consider the fact of Jesus as the Mighty God in light of the royal visitation.

Matthew 2:1-2 – Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Consider the fact of Jesus as the Mighty God in light of the murder attempt.

Matthew 2:3-16 – When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Consider the fact of Jesus as the Mighty God in light of Jesus’ words.

John 8:58 – Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Consider the fact of Jesus as the Mighty God in light of His power to create the world.

Colossians 1:16-17 – For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Therefore, as we look at this passage of Scripture in Isaiah 9:6 and see this wonderful and powerful statement that the child born would be the Mighty God – we should be amazed and humbled that the God of all creation would come and dwell among us in order to die and purchase our redemption. What a wonderful and powerful reminder of the purpose of Christmas. We should worship Christ who is the King of Christmas and the God of all creation.
