With all of the cheer that surrounds the Christmas season, it becomes increasingly difficult to find Christ in Christmas.  To the world, this time of year is nothing more than a commercialized holiday full of eggnog, glitter, lights, reindeer, and a jolly old man with a white beard.  However, to the Christian – this time of the year is set aside to celebrate and worship Jesus Christ our Savior who was born.In our series through the Gospel of John on Sunday mornings, we covered John 3:17-21 this past Sunday.  Although much was addressed in the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus – one often overlooked point was that Jesus proclaimed the purpose of Christmas to the religious Pharisee.John 3:17 – For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. Therefore, as we consider the true purpose of Christmas – we must remember that it was not about eggnog, glitter, lights, or little elves who build toys.  The purpose of Christmas was about salvation.  It was a saving mission.  Christmas was a redemptive mission.  Christmas was a Devil crushing, sin atoning, grave defeating, God propitiating, sinner saving mission.  That is why angels were filled with joyful song.  That is why Jesus came – to save us from our sin!Matthew 1:21 – And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. With all the focus this season on the bad economic numbers, and dismal holiday spending we tend to lose focus of where the real joy in our life is. Even as Christians we tend to let our joy be determined by what is around us. Of course it should not affect our joy whatsoever. As I have been reading the birth of our Lord to our family this week from Matthew a verse stood out like never before. Matthew 2:10 “When they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.” It is one thing to be joyful but “exceeding great” joy seems to really full of joy. Why? Because a Savior was born. If we look at our life in terms of what God has done and will do we won’t be focused on all the other bad news in the world.Let us be “exceedingly joyful” this year! O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

  2. As we celebrate the birth of our salvation, may we never forget the cost. For while we were enemies, Jesus still desired to come and save us by shedding his blood. And he died leaving us his peace.Who can understand that? May God open our hearts to the realization of the greatness of his love.God bless.www.mlordi.wordpress.comwww.time2standladies.wordpress.com
