Apparently the liberal news media is not threatened with Chick-fil-A cows asking Americans to “Eat Mor Chikin” – but when Dan Cathy, the President of the company went beyond chicken to the subject of religion – a firestorm of controversy broke out where politicians are openly trying to muzzle the cows – even rejecting business expansion.
The media frenzy surrounding the stand made by Chick-fil-A has taught us some valuable lessons about life in America. In a free nation, an open market, and a diverse culture where liberals demand a spirit of “tolerance” for differing people and their views, the media has decided to withhold that luxury from Chick-fil-A.
The chicken sandwich restaurant that prides itself on not inventing the chicken, “just the chicken sandwich” has recently been under intense scrutiny for positions on gay marriage. Chief Operating Officer Dan Cathy, son of the founder, Truett Cathy, made the following comments in an interview with Baptist Press on July 16th:
“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit,” Cathy said. “We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”
The proponents for the gay marriage agenda in America spread his comments throughout the media insisting that his words were bigoted hate speech that was intolerant of the homosexual community in America. This constant firestorm eventually led to several people leading a ban against the Chick-fil-A business. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino went on record as stating, “Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population.” Philadelphia City Councilman James Kenney sent a letter to Cathy, telling him to “take a hike and take your intolerance with you.” The frenzy of anti-Chick-fil-A comments stormed the media world with attempts to remove expansion opportunities for the corporation.
This eventually led to an official Chick-fil-A “appreciation day” created by Mike Huckabee through his Facebook page. The day was organized for Wednesday August 1st. Reports from all around the nation claim that lines stretched around buildings, swamped drive thru lines, and 2 hour waits in some locations just to support the business. In one location in Smyrna Tennessee, the Chick-fil-A ran out of chicken and when the announcement was made, the overflowing restaurant erupted in applause. In my own town of Douglasville, Ga, the Chick-fil-A had to organize a double drive thru line causing you to circle the restaurant twice before placing an order.
So – what can we learn from this controversy?
1. Religious liberty is under attack in America
This overwhelming turnout at Chick-fil-A today is more about religious liberty than a chicken sandwich. In America, we should be able to make statements about what we believe about family and our religious views without being sensored, rebuked, or scolded publicly – even if you happen to be the leader of a multi-billion dollar chicken sandwich company. New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn said, “We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength, and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that.” On the surface it seems that Chick-fil-A would be welcomed there. A spirit of “diversity” would include both homosexuals and pro-family views – right? However, her statement was intended to embrace everyone except the biblical position of Chick-fil-A. The point made by Americans all over our nation today is clear! The American public doesn’t want politicians or liberal media outlets telling them what they can or can’t say about their personal religious beliefs. Dr. Albert Mohler, in his article “My Take: Chick-fil-A controversy reveals religious liberty under threat” on the CNN Belief Blog, writes:
The threats made against Chick-fil-A betray the principle of religious liberty that is enshrined within the U.S. Constitution. Civic officials in some of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities have openly threatened to oppose Chick-fil-A for the singular reason that its president openly spoke of his Christian convictions concerning marriage.
2. Liberals refuse to play by the same rules for conservatives (especially Christians)
Liberals demand tolerance and acceptance of all religions, lifestyles, and personal practices so long as they don’t violate our laws. The liberals insist that the homosexual community should be treated fairly on marriage rights and corporate benefit packages within the employment world. However, when a conservative doesn’t violate any law, but simply embraces a solid religious position that opposes gay marriage (without being homophobic) - the liberals immediately go on the defense and attack! The lesson we can learn here is that liberals don’t extend the same spirit of tolerance toward those who are more conservative. In fact, they expect Christians to be “tolerant” of their “intolerance” and open attack on the free speech privileges that we should all enjoy as Americans.
3. The lies of the liberal media insists that gay rights are desired by the entire nation as a whole
If you listen to the liberal media (through social media, news broadcast, or newspaper) you will be led to believe that the overall majority of Americans desire marriage freedom and equal rights for same sex couples. They push that agenda through the news, entertainment outlets, talk shows, and politics. Right now the Democratic party is preparing to officially embrace same sex rights as the 2012 election season is about to be in full swing. However, the massive amount of people today who went to Chick-fil-A just to make a clear statement about this issue proves that conservatives want religious freedom and that they openly disapprove of the flamboyant homosexual agenda that is being pushed in the face of Americans.
4. It’s still possible to stand firm for Christ and His Word in America and remain a successful business
They way that the liberal media and politicians attacked Chick-fil-A would cause you to believe that no Christian led company with biblical family values can make it in America. However, the numbers of supporters who came out to support Chick-fil-A prove that’s not true. What other Christians in high positions within the corporate world should learn from this controversy is that God is bigger than any liberal agenda or politician. He has blessed Chick-fil-A through the years as they out perform many fast food chains on a 6 day work week compared to the others who operate on a 7 day work week. Chick-fil-A is a multi-billion dollar business that is completely debt free. At the time each restaurant is opened – it’s already debt free. Their business model is solid, but beyond all of this – they have a strong commitment to honor Jesus Christ. For that – all of the Christians in the business world can take note.
It’s still possible to be a Christian led company and be successful in America. Dan Cathy, in his interview with Baptist Press, said, “[We are] based on biblical principles, asking God and pleading with God to give us wisdom on decisions we make about people and the programs and partnerships we have. And He has blessed us.”
May God be pleased to bless Dan Cathy and the leaders of Chick-fil-A as they continue to stand strong in our anti-family, anti-Christ, anti-Bible culture. In the end, we must remember what the Bible says, “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).
For the glory of King Jesus!
