OFFICIAL: Westboro Baptist Church Interview – Part I

protestAfter witnessing to Westboro Baptist Church in Indianapolis, I was left with a severely confused view of their position on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Great Commission. Therefore, I contacted the Westboro Baptist group and requested an official interview regarding these issues. They agreed to the terms, and as of late last night, I have received their response. The full interview consists of 29 questions regarding practical and theological issues. Due to the length of the interview, it will be broken up into two days. The first half of the interview will be posted today, and the second half will be posted tomorrow. The remainder of the week will be dedicated to my response to their answers and positions.

WARNING: The response from Westboro does contain some cursing. The unedited version is a bit sloppy and does contain many passages of Scripture which were simply copied from a web version of the Bible. Therefore, in attempt to shorten the interview, I have cited the reference in most cases where the full chapter or large portion of Scripture was used. I will also provide a .pdf of the uncut version for your download at the conclusion of the interview.

1. When was Westboro Baptist Church constituted?

RESPONSE: November, 27, 1955

2. Who is the pastor of the church?

RESPONSE: Pastor Fred Phelps

3. Does Westboro Baptist Church belong to any association of church groups?

RESPONSE: No – like our spiritual forefathers at the beginning of the Church Age, we appear as those churches found in the scriptures. Local; visible; self-governing; Bible believing; obedient; having the ordinances of baptism by emersion of professing and orderly-walking persons and the Lord’s Supper, using one loaf and one cup from which all partake, exercising church discipline over her members; having all things being done decently and in order; with NO women preachers or women being anything when the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ meets except uncut hair, head-covered, participating in the song service and otherwise, remaining silent during the service, etc. NO tentacles reaching round the nation or the world, as that is NOT borne out in scripture as a part of it. Please see Proverbs 31; Psalm 48 and for some good words about her people that HE, who holds the keys to the doors of utterance has opened unto us, great doors and effectual, so that today, our faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. By the loving kindness and mercy of our God, who has given us HUGE doors of utterance, great and effectual, we are permitted today to bind this nation and this generation with chains and fetters of iron, so that Doomed america now SPRINTS to her destruction. Because your oil and wine has not been touched, so that you have your soft, fluffy, gluttonous manner of life in tact, you don’t even see that the siege is upon you! Like those that Noah preached to, who knew not till the waters came and took them all away. Here are some words about these faithful servants:Isaiah 52:7-12Read that some more – that is excellent! You see, we don’t need that monster overseer (think the Vatican – that great pedophile monster sitting, like the whore of Revelation 18 with her big fat a_ _ sitting all over the whole world, think the Southern Baptist monster overseer with all its mess, sitting in Nashville, etc.). No, we have the Lord our God, and he goes out before us and he keeps us in all our ways! Further, He, who begun this good work in us at HIS good will and by HIS good pleasure will see it through to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power and glory, in a flame of fire, with the shout and the voice of the arch angel and with the trump of God, and he will collect up his jewels, both dead and alive (the dead rise first) and he will deal with this nation and generation of rebels against him (and you have NO cause, you have Bibles EVERYWHERE!) to your face. You truly must read and listen to the sermon from yesterday, June 22, 2008 about where the ungodly and sinners will appear.

4. Where is Westboro Baptist Church located?

RESPONSE: 3701 SW 12th Street, Topeka, Kansas.

5. How many members does Westboro Baptist Church have in attendance for worship services?

RESPONSE: All of her members appear for our worship services when the church meets (except for those few occasions when a team or two or three will be on the road, delivering a faithful message from God to this generation – but we try today to avoid that clashing with our service times). We appear with our sons and our daughters to meet with the Lord our God and receive the blessings of excellent preaching from our pastor, whom our God has mercifully set as the overseer of this little Church of the Firstborn. Our pastor fits the profile and has the qualifications required in scripture, check out this job description:1 Timothy 3:1-13About that word bishop – here is Strong’s on that:1985 episkopov episkopos ep-is’-kop-osfrom 1909 and 4649 (in the sense of 1983); TDNT-2:608,244; n mAV-bishop 6, overseer 1; 71) an overseer1a) a man charged with the duty of seeing that things to be done by others are done rightly, any curator, guardian or superintendent1b) the superintendent, elder, or overseer of a Christian churchDon’t look now, but there truly ARE standards that we are expected to OBEY and FOLLOW! They are truly NOT on the table for disposal at the will of this brutish, rebellious, disobedient, idol-worshiping (think your goofy Christmas crap at the top of the idol heap), false-god pushing and FILTHY manner of life.

6. Did the court ruling in recent days hinder the Westboro Baptist Church mission in any way?

RESPONSE: No – you need to think of that entire bit of mischief as a HUGE megaphone. It was so many things, but NONE of those things can be called a hindrance. It was a bit of drama that necessarily had to play out so that the return of our blessed Savior, and the events that must occur prior to that time would get into place, and those events are now coming on apace. If you read Jonathan Edwards book, The History of Redemption you would find a place where he discusses that when the time came for Christ to be born into this world, that the events had to come on apace to fulfil the prophesies and to get things into place. That is what is happening now for the return of our Lord and Savior, or King. Had you bothered to read the words of scripture and heed them and live in them, you would know that it is by the persecutions that the Word of God drops like a shower all over this globe! These things are precious tokens of our Father’s love toward us. It is the very patience of the saints. Read these words with distinction!Revelation 14:6-12And these words – read them with some discipline:Revelation 13:4-10Even for the masses of you that don’t understand most of those words – you can at least see that it is in the midst of persecutions (that would be the making war with the saints – Rev. 13:7 and it includes all the actions you rebels against God engage in to try and shut us up because we won’t go along with your false religious system and your lying about God and his character and his attributes as reported in the scriptures – we are faithful to the written word and you KNOW it!) that patience is necessary and is learned. Some more goodness on that subject and remember – it is in the most severe afflictions that we learn and perfect patience, check out these words and see how the patience is connected with the afflictions:2 Corinthians 6:4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,2 Thessalonians 1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:It is for our patiently enduring all your persecutions and lying on God and the daily vexing of our righteous souls (as ancient Sodom did to Just Lot) with your filthy deeds that God will avenge us for! Thus, we keep our hands OFF the getting back at or otherwise taking any of such matters into our own hands, as our God is the avenger of all such! Check out this precious language:Hebrews 10:30-39And those words take us directly into the chapter on the heros of the faith (Hebrews 11) who patiently endured persecutions and afflictions, which directly precedes these excellent words of exhortation to those of us living in the earth, and especially those of us living in these very last days of all. Check it out now:Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.James 5:1-111 Peter 5:6-112 Peter 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;Revelation 1:9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. You see – what does Satan have in his power to do to us except energize his minions to persecute us and try to make our service to our God so onerous and painful and scary that we will simply shut up and go away – draw back as it says in Hebrews 10. But you see – we are NOT in his hands to save or to destroy – so we press on, counting him faithful that called us and gave us this great blessing. Think about it Josh – we get the blessing of light and the wisdom of God and we get to preach to the whole world in these last days of all.Check out this precious promise to us for these last days of all – this is for us Josh and I dearly love it!!Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia (think Topeka, Kansas, Doomed america J) write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; You will NEVER shut us up when our God opens the doors! YEA!8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. That would be FAITHFUL to his written word!9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews (remember Paul says that WE, spiritual Israel are the spiritual Jews – we are the seed of Abraham – you know he said it – I’m just sayin . . . J), and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Oh yes – read that precious promise again and again – it is life and health and marrow to our bones!!10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. What more could you want then that Josh? Oh and on that overcoming thing – if not in severe afflictions, what is there to overcome? If it were easy Josh, any jackass could do it!!13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. And on the flip side of this – if you don’t have an ear – you will NEVER hear – you will be Isaiah 6 – blind eyes, stopped up ears and hard hearts – see our Savior repeating that bit of goodness here (Paul also snapped it up because it is a work of God to curse the rebels in that fashion – blind, deaf and hard-hearted!) Mt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And this: Mt 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.Ac 28:27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.Revelation 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

7. Did you lose any members as a result?

RESPONSE: How funny are you! NO! At this hour, with the coming of our Lord drawing nigh – here is how we lose members: Matthew 3:9-12

8. Do you consider yourself to be a Christian?

RESPONSE: What an impudent question from a clueless source. You brutes have given that concept a bad name. Here it is Josh – we follow the teachings of Christ, almost to the exclusion of the rest of this generation – therefore, we are entitled to be called Christian. My skin crawls listening to this generation blather on . . . “I looooovvvvveeeeee Jeessus” even as she lives in adultery. This nation has a policy of adultery Josh – can you say Cheaters? And worse than that – you have a 60 percent divorce and remarriage rate – the self-righteous Southern Baptists are some of the very worst – so what pray tell do you do with this?!?: Luke 16:18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.HELLO – is this mic on? If you are divorced and remarried, you are living in adultery! Now Josh – that is what we told the brutes in Maryland and for that, we got to be dragged across the country and put on trial! We were so thankful because you see Josh – we still had our heads! John the Baptist (for whom we get our Baptist name) lost his head for plainly saying DIVORCE + REMARRIAGE = ADULTERY! Oh yes – they want our heads, but our God stays their hands!

9. How did you become a Christian? Please explain the location and the brief context of what was going on during that moment of time (church, home, work, etc.).

RESPONSE: Shut up Josh – are you trying to gag me with a pitch fork? Do you think that I would tell you such information for you brutes to pour over and access? Here is what we have been sent to tell you Josh:GOD HATES YOU! YOU ARE GOING TO HELL! GOD HATES FAGS! GOD HATES FAG ENABLERS! GOD HATES AMERICA! AMERICA IS DOOMED! THE SIEGE IS COMING (NEW sign – hot off the press – get the mental picture until you can see it before your eyes you lucky duck – you get the first vision of this sign – think COMING with a strike mark through it and on one side of the sign it says just below the stricken COMING it says HERE – get it Josh – the siege is here! Don’t look now, but he siege is here. Then, on the other side of the sign it says – just below the stricken COMING – it says ON YOU. The siege is on you Josh – you just don’t see it yet. Stay tuned!) YOUR PASTOR IS A LYING WHORE. YOUR PASTOR IS LYING! FAG PIMP POPE! PRIESTS RAPE CHILDREN. (apparently we need a new sign after some articles I have recently read – it will look like this SOUTHERN BAPTIST PREACHERS RAPE CHILDREN) And so much more! THANK GOD FOR DEAD CHILDREN! THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS! You need to go to www.signmovies.net and find the sign movies section and watch the videos that explains each of these signs! Good stuff! Here you lying false prophets are:Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.Matthew 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

10. What is your official definition of the Gospel?

RESPONSE: What – you don’t have a dictionary in Nashville? Let me help you with this – from Dictionary.com:gos·pel g_s p_l – Show Spelled Pronunciation[gos-puh l] Pronunciation Key – Show IPA Pronunciation–noun

1. the teachings of Jesus and the apostles; the Christian revelation.

2. the story of Christ’s life and teachings, esp. as contained in the first four books of the New Testament, namely Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

3. (usually initial capital letter ) any of these four books.

4. something regarded as true and implicitly believed: to take his report for gospel.

5. a doctrine regarded as of prime importance: political gospel.

6. glad tidings, esp. concerning salvation and the kingdom of God as announced to the world by Christ.

7. (often initial capital letter ) Ecclesiastical. an extract from one of the four Gospels, forming part of the Eucharistic service in certain churches.

8. GOSPEL MUSIC.–adjective9. of, pertaining to, or proclaiming the gospel or its teachings: a gospel preacher.

10. in accordance with the gospel; evangelical.

11. of or pertaining to gospel music: a gospel singer.

Now – for your squishy discussion – “T H E G O S P E L I S T H E G O O D N E W S” freak show, wherein you substitute lies about God loving everyone for obedience to his commandments and standards and get butts in the seats so you can have money in your coffers because you think the Word of God can be purchased – YIKES – let me help with that as well, to wit:1. There is NO good news for you liars!2. There is NO forgiveness without repentance!3. The good news freaks is that not EVERYONE has to go to hell! As many as were called, believed! I can’t make this stuff up Josh – check out the WORDS OF THE BIBLE!, to wit: Ac 13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. JOSH – you can’t multiply words and change that standard of God – if he did not ordain you before the foundation of the world to eternal life, you will NEVER believe! In these last days of all, which Christ said will be as in the days of Noah (EIGHT – 8 – souls went into that ark) and Lot (THREE – 3 – souls left out of Sodom alive) – so shall it be when the Son of Man returns – and Luke 18 says – WILL HE EVEN FIND THE FAITH when he returns. So get over all that winning souls to Christ and lying to make the Word of God palatable for the rebels! If you can get them to pretend they are going to serve God – you have NOTHING before you work on them and you have NOTHING after you are done with them and worse – according to this passage – when you get them they are worse off than they were before because you are a crusty liar and rebel yourself. Pretending that Christ is some wimp and mealy mouthed, kissy-poo liar like you! Here is some excellent words by our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, that hell-fire and brimstone preacher that you love to lie about! READ HIS WORDS! Oh – and see if you can find the persecutions and patience in this excellent sermon! To quote my 6-year-old – I love here this!

Matthew 23:1-39

  3. I had a friend say:When people get squeezed, we find out what kind of fruit is inside them. If they are sour, that was there all along — but squeezing simply showed what was on the inside.Thank you for your courage, Josh. I would not be offended at the unedited remarks, they are showing their fruit, not yours.

  4. Hey Josh – you said you would publish the words. You KNOW that your audiance of phony self-righteous hypocrites are NEVER going to go and read those passage cites. If I can spend several hours pulling together those verses and answering all your questions, the least you can do is publish the text of those verses. That way, at least one time in their miserable lives, those brutes who traffic on this page will actually READ THE WORDS!Don’t make me get cross Josh. :)Your best friend,Shirley Phelps-Roper

  6. Shirley Phelps-Roper–Are you one of the female ministers in your church that the answers to these questions adamantly denies that you exist within their church. Also, just a quick question, is it being in submission to your husband, as the Scriptures implicitly teach, to use a hyphenated last name? Is it rebellion or is it pride for your father’s last name?

  7. Shirley,My introduction makes it plain that I chose this option in order to shorten the interview for the web. Tomorrow, at the end of the interview posts, I will have the full .pdf version for people to download.I will also spend the remainder of the week addressing your positions and answers. I hope you choose to come back to see why I disagree with you on several main issues related to the gospel and the Great Commission.Rev. Josh Buice

  8. I am like Bill right now, SHOCKED! I guess I shouldn’t be though because it just goes to show you how without a firm foundation of the Scriptures that people can justify what they want out of them and in this day and time it is everywhere. The Bible does say that the wicked will be punished,no doubt about it, but we are not the Judge, fruit inspectors yes, but not the Judge. The Truth of the Word should not be oppressed, but at the same time it should be delivered out of love to those who know not and care not, from those who do know and do care about the souls of all men. No, not all will come, but it is our job, “our vocation wherewith we are called”,to bring forth the Gospel to all everywhere. From the start of the interview I could feel, not the love for people who are on their way to hell fire for eternity, but animosty, a pure hate for those folks, by those folks who were heading to the same place until a merciful God, who isn’t obligated to save any but chose to show grace to us and them! Is not the same mercy and grace to be shown by us by taking the glad tidings of a resurrected Savior to the world!? The Great Commission! I have found it hard to believe someone is a christian who can’t even tell me how and when he was saved and in fact even dodge the question all together. It smells like bad fruit! I pray for those within this Westboro church, that God would enlighten their eyes to show them who He really is,not just part, but his whole character. It is out of love that I say these things and in the Love of Christ I leave. God Bless!

  9. I couldn’t have said it better Cooke. Their distorted veiw of the gospel is so detrimental to church it’s not even funny. What’s even worse is they put Baptist in their name, so now many people will automatically associate any Baptist church with them.Josh, your patience with them is an example for all of us.I just pray that when I’m in a similar situation, I can represent our God as well as you have.

  12. I followed this story from Challies. I have visited before.I keep thinking, “test the spirits.” When you asked of their conversion, why would this (presumably) woman not delight in telling the story of when/where/how the Lord God rescued her own soul from certain Hell? I mean, it was chilling to read such seething hatred…it was like something was cornered and terribly afraid. My heart hurts over this.

  13. Shirley,Why do you continue to call us brutes, and phony self-righteous hypocites? Are you saying that if we don’t act the way you act that we are wrong? You don’t know our hearts and by the answers and avoided answers given here you show me no love for our Lord Jesus Christ. You said in one of your interviews that because your own Son left the church that he was going straight to Hell. Where does your Salvation come from and what about the Great Commission? Let me give you reference to the LOVE in the Bible:Lev. 19:18Deu. 6:5Joshua 23:11Psa. 5:11Psa. 116:1Psa. 145:20Prov. 8:17Prov. 10:12Zec. 8:17Mark 12:30-31John 13:3415:9-13Rom. 5:8-98:28Gal. 5:22Eph. 5:2Heb. 10:24John 3:16-17John 17:232Cor. 12:15Gal. 2:201John 4:10-114:19And I could go on and on with it. You can quote all the hate you want but you can’t take away the LOVE. I’ll pray for you and your followers.By the way, why are you answering instead of the pastor? He is the head of the church isn’t he?Thank you Josh for your courage to keep the word.Darlene

    • I will say this. I’m not Christian, but secular. I am however a believer in that good begets good, and vice versa.

In terms of computer technology, the “software” of these people is, I believe, as corrupted as can possibly be. There is no reasoning with them, as anything you ask them, tell them, or any gesture you do to amicably approach them will be processed through the filter of hate, fear, and despair. They’re fed hate and animosity constantly until the neural pathways are wired as process only that. Their brains are hardwired to hate from the day they were born!

They look upon the world and all they see is ugliness, filth and falsehood. They look upon their god, and all they see is a wrathful, jealous, and utterly terrifying figure. A tyrant. This is merely a reflection of themselves.

If I then may be so bold as to speak in biblical terms (although it is not my place), it sounds to me as if the god they worship is not all that different from Satan. After all their version of God seems to possess all the qualities of the latter.

Since I’m not religious, I’m not praying for these people, but I DO pity them. I sincerely hope that someday they see reason. And I congratulate all members who were fortunate enough to break away from the WBC (either of their own accord, or by expulsion) . Their courage is remarkable. Welcome to life. It’s a beautiful life, a full life in a world full of beauty and wonder.

Thank you Josh for posting this. The WBC is a Christian problem, and you dealt with it and took a stand. You have my utter respect.

  23. Think of them as the extreme that is bred by the extreme in the other direction, which seems normal to you all. The devil’s got you all by the throat and you justify if and live and let live and act politically correct, and get scared and obsequious and on and on. As the devil’s kingdom swirls and rises all around you you just get used to it, to each new degree of it, and then get angry at anyone who points out the reality of it to you. You call them mentally deranged, but your own derangement you are blind to.You all also are so used to having yourselves policed by your worldly overseers that zeal in a Christian is something that only effects you as craziness. You see any degree of zeal and you cringe and get angry and shun. Real Christians who have the Spirit tend to be zealous. It makes uncomfortable the various denizens of the villages of morality you call your churches and communities. Lukewarmness is what you consider to be normal and correct behaviour.Of course these particular Christians are easy to mock and easy to criticize. As I stated, they are an extreme bred by where the ‘norm’ now is, and part of their approach is to shock you into seeing yourself, but for them to be able to do that they have to get pretty extreme. This is because, as stated above, what you consider normal is rather remarkably end-times-satanic.

  24. “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.” Matthew 15:18 ESVI can’t really add anything to the rebuke of these people that’s already in Holy Scripture. But it is ironic that they themselves quote this passage to their own condemnation.

  25. J. Smith,Granted there is a problem with the proper preaching of the law in many churches today. Churches all too often capitulate to sinful culture. But, the preaching of the law must have it’s proper place. To continually preach condemnation without also proclaming that Christ is a willing and sufficient Savior for sinners, is to adhere to nothing more than the leaven of the scribes and Pharisees. In John 3, Jesus likens his mission to being lifted up just as the bronze serpent was in the Old Testament. Any Israelite who was bitten (by snakes sent by God as a judgment) could look at the pole and be healed. So likewise any sinner condemned by the law who looks to Christ for forgiveness and an alien righteousness is saved from wrath. To leave that out is to do the devil’s work.

  26. Thanks for your work in exposing this cult. And you did it not by debating but by simply asking questions and allowing Ms. Roper to show us what she and her clan are all about.I’ve read the WBC website regularly over the past few years (I’m not sure why I do it; I always come away angered or saddened), and I’ve come to the conclusion that these people don’t practice what they preach (i.e., obedience to the Word of God). The Bible tells us that:1. God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ez. 33:11; also see Ez. 18:12). Yet this “church” regularly demonstrates its delight in the fact that sinners die and go to hell.2. We are to speak to and treat everyone with respect (1 Peter 2:17). Just read a few of the blogs on this site, and you’ll see a steady stream of name-calling, insults, and belittling from a group of people so blinded by their hatred that they are incapable of preaching the gospel or speaking to others the way Peter, John, Paul and others did.3. We are to do everything through the power of the Holy Spirit, and not “in the flesh” (too many references to list). Yet this clan does nothing but spew hatred and fleshliness.4. We are not to celebrate at the calamity of others (Prov. 17:5). Yet the vilest of these people’s “celebrations” come when death or disaster strikes a people or people-group. It seems the more tragic the event, the more delight they take in it. (i.e. “Thank God for Dead Children”)As a follower of Jesus Christ–one who, by the way, is saddened and angered at the open sin I see around me, as well as he pride so many seem to take in it–I am embarrassed at the attention this cult receives and saddened that so many people associate them with true, biblical Christianity.

  28. Well, once again the bad fruit of Westboro Baptist Church manifests itself in mockery, cutting words and general arrogance. Shirley Phelps-Roper, in her capacity as the de facto spokesperson for WBC, is a disgrace to the words “Christian” or “Baptist”.

  29. This organization called Westburo Baptist Church was created to show people that say they are christians how hypocritical most of the clan that claims to follow Christ is. Most Christians spend their time talking about certain types /sin the most, while keeping other types of sins on the back burner and not talked about as much. Christians choose in their minds acceptable sin versus unacceptable and unnatural, but they will never admit that to you or themselves because to admit such would be a sin, but do they clearly not realize lying is a sin as well. It’s clearly obvious that Westburo is NOT REAL, why ? Because, they will give you a clue by telling you their mission isn’t to win souls for Jesus, but yet people usually Christians get angry and try to talk to these people, when the joke is on the Christians. Maybe this is a lesson on God’s very own Church. His church professes they want relationship with Him, and not religion, but yet all they do is throw the law around, they’re either obeying it and judging others for not obeying it, or they’re not obeying it and judging others for not obeying it enough. And if you preach you’re not under the law AT ALL, then maybe you should read about when Jesus said, i did not come to abolish the law, but rather fulfill it. Something to think about for your sinning Christians.

  30. Westboro Baptists leadership has chosen an effective marketing strategy for the propagation of hate. Their leadership is a confused family stumbling reveling in their publicity and generating strong feeling of disgust for their abuse of Christian values. In other societies which did not offer freedom of speech they would be subject to violence and strong repudiation for their ill will and malice. It sickens my soul to see the heart of Jesus Christ used be a church of hate. To hurt innocent people to propagate a message of hate is wrong. Best to ignore these low lifes who besmirch the name of Christ and let karma seek them out for the maggots they portray under the spell of publicity.

  32. Siddartha-It’s interesting to me that you are so quick to defend the name of Christ and yet use the threat of Karma, clearly an unbiblical principle, on the members of Westboro. Could you explain this please?

  33. This would be hilarious if it wasn’t at the same time so troubling. I honestly think that the Westboro church is just a faux production of a fallen Methodist minister turned atheist who’s just after the publicity.

  34. I think these folks start their interpretation of Scripture based on a premise that God is some sort of cackling monster who only accounts for those whose actions prove their worth.I don’t know how their theological interpretation accounts for the adultery of David, the moral ineptitude of Samson, the weakness of Elijah… all flawed savior-types who served the Lord but that point to the antitype who is Jesus Christ. If God truly “hates” homosexuals, why did he preordain from before the foundations of the world to send Jesus to the cross? How is the sin of pride different from the sin of sexual abomination? How is condemning your neighbor somehow not a sin against the commandment Jesus credited as the second most important?Jesus provided a clear picture of God’s heart. Emmanuel: God with us, He came to die for even the smallest sin… because even the smallest, most innocent sin invalidates our claim to the Father. The Law was fulfilled through Christ, but we all have a sinful nature to this day. In Ephesians, we learn that we are all saved by Grace through Faith, so that no person can boast of their good works earning their salvation. I don’t know how they can account for all this in their legalistic message of salvation through prideful boasts of understanding.I feel badly for them, but their hearts are hardened to the message of love of God for us. We cannot change that, we can only pray for God’s mercy to work in their lives.

  35. Just throwing out. The name baptist did not come from John the Baptist. It came for the slang for them “Rebaptist”. This was because they rejected the baptism of other churches and rebaptized individuals seeking membership after leaving one of the other churches. This was just later shortened to Baptist.

  36. I read Diane’s response and it really made me think. I have a similar thinking with Jackie.I have done a good bit of research on the demonic (I’m definitely no expert though!) and I definitely think there is demonic influence here. It is Diane’s assessment that really made me catch it. The manner of Ms. Roper’s responses to Josh’s questions, especially the ones that Ms. Roper intentionally avoided, are very similar to the manners of demons when they reveal themselves as they are being cast out of a person. This doesn’t even mean that her or anyone in the WBC is possessed. But it is a possibility. However, if one has opened themselves up to the opportunity, they can be heavily influenced by the demonic, without becoming possessed. Demons are able to prevent a person from hearing or understanding particular reasonings, especially when it’s about Jesus. This may be the case. They may not be able to hear and understand the message of the love of God through Christ, no matter how many times they are told, because it is being blocked internally. One more thing is the overwhelming amount of hate that comes through this interview. (Josh, you handled it so well, thank you!) I don’t know if humans can actually house that much hatred, but I know demons can and do constantly. We know that demons fiercely HATE God and humans. (I feel like I should inject a verse reference here, but unfortunately I can’t think of any right now.)Anyway, there is all I’ve said above and more reasons why I think this group or at least this one person is demonically influenced. However, now I don’t know what to do about it.I guess, find an expert on such things. But, by no means stop praying; KEEP PRAYING!

    • What we can do is pray that somehow the demonic power is broken. They will not hear love or gospel until that power is broken.

  37. Shocked is a good word to use for my reaction. I do think that the Westboro Baptist “Church” gives chirstians and baptists a bad name. I know so many GOOD christians and baptists, and this…this is disgusting to me. The Westboro Baptist church preaches lies and ignorance. I mean “Thank God for Dead Children”? What? What does that accomplish? What would they say if one of their children died before they we 12? Hmmm? They would have a different view point. It is sad that I am 17 and have a deeper understanding of the world than they ever will because they cloud their minds with hate and ignoarance.
